Oakham in BloomOakham Baptist Church has been associated with Oakham in Bloom for a number of years. In particular a number of Church members have taken responsibility for looking after the circular bed outside the Rutland Radio building and the planters near the level crossing.
In the earlier years the circular bed was replanted in the spring and autumn. Difficulties with watering made the circular bed unattractive at times so perennial plants are now used instead. This bed now needs occasional tidying up and weeding.
In the spring and autumn we plant up the six square planters and keep these weed free especially before the judging for the East Midlands in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions in July and August respectively. The front garden of the Church is also spruced up for these occasions.
Oakham has regularly won the competitions in their particular group or if not actually winning have still been given gold awards. In 2011 Oakham came first in the East Midlands town category with a gold certificate. The judges had commented - "Once again Oakham have managed to maintain the very high standard set over the past few years. High quality planting throughout the town, lack of litter, a balanced and considered approach to the core pillars of the campaign backed by strong support from the community and local businesses combine to make this a most impressive entry."
